Rwanda is a landlocked country in Central Africa, often referred to as “the land of a thousand hills.” It is located on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift, a western branch of the Great Rift Valley, positioned on the watershed between two of Africa’s largest river systems: the Nile and the Congo.
Much of the country’s 26,338 km² is notably mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Karisimbi (4,507 m) in the volcanic Virunga chain, which is protected by Volcanoes National Park. In addition to this park, Rwanda is home to two other national parks: Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park.
Lake Kivu is the largest body of water in Rwanda, but there are numerous other lakes throughout the country, including Burera, Ruhondo, Muhazi, and Mugesera. Many of these lakes have unique shapes that follow the contours of the steep mountains surrounding them.
Rwanda is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. One of the most popular attractions is gorilla trekking, where visitors can see the famous mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park, often described as “Rwanda’s wildlife jewel.”
Volcanoes National Park is the hub of many adventurous activities, but Rwanda’s culture is also a noteworthy aspect of the experience. Enjoy a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema, go on a game drive safari in Akagera National Park to observe diverse wildlife, and experience canopy walking in Nyungwe Forest, along with primate trekking tours for a memorable adventure.
