Fort Portal
The ever green Fort portal town is endowed with beautiful views. And surrounded by traditional homesteads ruled by a traditional King. The Tooro Kingdom is one of the 4 kingdoms in Uganda with the Palace standing right across the town.
Located in western Uganda, Fort Portal has quite a number of places to visit and they include;
Kibale Forest National Park
This is one of Uganda’s magnificent rain forests famously known for its Chimpanzees and 12 other primate species. Including the Colobus monkeys, grey cheeked Mangabey and blue monkeys among others. Also known as the Primate Capital of the World, Kibale Forest has a number of birds amounting to 372 species.
Amabeere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves
The Amabeere ga Nyina Mwiru caves are an amazing historical site located just a few kilometers west of Fort Portal town. These caves are believed to be the previous birthplace of the king of the ancient Bachwezi and its name means the “Breasts of Nyina Mwiru”. You will find stalactites which resemble breasts of a woman. And it takes 3 hours to hike and reach them. The Amabeere ga Nyina Mwiru caves are a great attraction. Due to their great history, hundreds of visitors come here every year on hiking or guided tours.
Tooro ‘Omukama’ Palace
The beautiful Tooro palace, also known as the Omukama Palace overlooks the catchy Fort portal town on Karuzika hill. It was built by the Batooro in the early 1960’s with a unique architectural design which left an inerasable impression on all those who beheld it. The Tooro Kingdom was restored in 1993 and it’s among the 4 traditional kingdoms of Uganda, presently (2018) ruled by King Oyo.
Lake Kyaninga
For those who have never been to Fort portal, Lake Kyaninga is yet another beautiful crater lake located near Kyaninga lodge. It was formed due to volcanic activity about 10,000 years ago and it has a meandering shape with nearby rainforests adding shading to the beauty of this Crater Lake. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
The Bigodi wetland is a perfect bird watchers paradise with an extensive array of biodiversity which includes several primates’ species. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is known for many bird species with over 200 recorded species for instance Kingfishers, Hornbills, Turacos, Cranes, Parrot and the Great Blue Turaco among others. Rich in scenic beauty and biodiversity, Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is situated on the wildlife corridor of Kibale Forest National Park and it’s a must visit for all nature lovers.
Tooro Semuliki Wildlife Reserve
Established as a game reserve in 1926, Tooro Semuliki Wildlife Reserve enjoys a dramatic rift valley setting between Rwenzori, kijura escarpment and also Lake Albert. Mammal species found within this reserve such as elephants, Uganda Kobs, buffaloes, Waterbucks, Warthogs, Giant Forest Hogs and Primates like the Black and White Colobus monkeys, Vervet monkeys and the red tailed monkeys among others. Visitors to this reserve can enjoy activities like nature walks, primate walks, game drives and also community walks to the nearby villages of Ntoroko.
