Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is a protected area established in 1925 to conserve mountain gorillas. Day 2: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park – Bigodi Wetland and Community Visit
On the morning of Day 2 of your Safari, you’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast before embarking on an exciting drive to Kibale National Park, located in the stunning Western region of Uganda within the Kabarole district. This drive will take approximately 6 hours and promises breathtaking scenic views of Uganda’s captivating landscape.
As you go to the park, you’ll stop for lunch in Fort Portal Tourism City, a vibrant hub showcasing the local culture. Afterward, you’ll head to the Bigodi wetland for an invigorating swamp walk. During this walk, you’ll have the opportunity to spot an array of butterfly species and birds, including the Black-crowned Waxbill, White-spotted Flufftail, White-breasted Negrofinch, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Black Bishop, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Yellow-billed Barbet, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Black & White Shrike-flycatcher, Western Nicator, and Superb Sunbird, among many others.
Following your wildlife experience, you’ll engage in a fascinating community walk. Day 3: Kibale Forest National Park – Chimpanzee Habituation
Rise and shine early for a hearty breakfast as you embark on Day 3 of your exhilarating 10-day Uganda & Rwanda Gorilla Safari Adventure. Dress smartly in long-sleeved shirts, durable khaki or jean trousers, a round cap, waterproof boots, and a heavy sweater to shield yourself from falling tree branches and unpredictable weather. Don’t forget to pack some snacks and plenty of water to stay hydrated during the trek, which can take 1 to 5 hours, depending on the chimpanzees’ location.
Your journey begins at the Kanyachu Visitor Center, where you’ll receive an essential briefing on the Do’s and Don’ts of the park. Here, you’ll be paired with a knowledgeable park ranger who will guide you through the forest and introduce you to an assigned chimpanzee family.
As you trek through the lush landscape, keep your eyes peeled for a variety of primates, including black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, mantled guerezas, pottos, vervet monkeys, white-eyelid mangabeys, and galagos. Make your way to the park headquarters, where you’ll receive essential briefings on the Do’s and Don’ts of interacting with the magnificent Mountain Gorillas. After your orientation, a knowledgeable park ranger will accompany you into the breathtaking Impenetrable Forest to track a habituated gorilla family. Depending on their location, your search could take anywhere from 1 to 7 hours, but once you find them, you will have the priceless opportunity to spend up to one hour observing their behavior and learning about their lives. Your ranger will be on hand to answer all your questions and enhance your understanding of these incredible animals.
As you traverse the forest searching for gorillas, keep your eyes peeled for the myriad of other wildlife that call this lush environment home, including various bird species, elephants, and antelopes. Day 8: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking – IBY ‘lwacu Community Encounter
Upon awakening to the melodious sounds of birdsong, participants will commence Day 8 of the 10-Day Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla Safari Adventure with an early morning breakfast. It is advisable to wear suitable attire for the day, including a long-sleeved shirt, khaki or denim trousers, a round cap, and waterproof boots. This attire is essential to protect against falling branches in Volcanoes National Park and anticipate inclement weather. Participants should also pack snacks and water to maintain hydration during the trek.
The group will proceed to the park’s headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing regarding the guidelines for observing while interacting with the mountain gorillas. Each participant will be assigned a park ranger who will guide the trek and designate a specific gorilla family to locate. The search for the mountain gorillas may last between 2 to 8 hours, contingent upon the animals’ movements and foraging patterns. During the trek, participants will have the opportunity to observe various avian species, including the Long-Crested Eagle, Stonechat, Cinnamon-Breasted Bee-Eater, Grey-Throated Thrush, African Marsh Harrier, Common Moorhen, and Paradise Flycatcher, among others.
Upon locating the gorillas, participants will be permitted to spend one hour observing them. This time will provide an opportunity to learn about their behaviors, feeding habits, parental care, and modes of communication. Participants are encouraged to inquire extensively about these remarkable creatures and to capture memorable photographs. Following this encounter, the group will return to their accommodation for lunch.
In the afternoon, attendees will visit the Iby’iwacu Community to engage with the local population and exchange life experiences. This visit will offer insights into African cultural practices and lifestyles. Notably, many men in this community are former poachers who have transitioned into active roles within the park’s conservation projects. Participants will participate in various activities, including the honorary crowning as King or Queen of the Day while enjoying traditional music and dance. After this enriching experience, the group will return to their accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Next, you will head to the park’s headquarters at the Kinigi Visitor Center for an essential Do’s and Don’ts briefing while encountering the Golden monkeys. You will be assigned a knowledgeable park ranger to guide you during your trek and introduce you to a designated Golden Monkey group. Then, you’ll set off into the lush jungle for these magnificent creatures. This adventure through the captivating bamboo forests will take about 3 to 4 hours, as these fascinating animals reside at the base of the Volcano Mountains. Along the way, you will likely encounter various mammals such as buffaloes, forest elephants, bush pigs, duikers, forest hogs, spotted hyenas, and different bird species.
