Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is Africa’s largest Afro-Montane forest located in the South Western region of Rwanda at the Boarder with Burundi. It was established as a National park in 2004 and it is famous for having Chimpanzees which have 98.8% of human DNA. The park has 2 Habituated groups, the larger group has 60 Chimpanzees and the smaller group has 30 chimpanzees. Nyungwe Forest National Park also boosts of about 13 primate species and these are chimpanzees, Silver monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, golden monkeys, Hamlyn’s Monkeys, grey-cheeked Mangabeys, Dent’s Mona Monkeys, Angola Colobus, Red-tailed Monkeys, vervet monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The park also provides a safe haven for over 300 bird species with 29 of them being Albertine Rift Endemics. Nyungwe forest also has about 85 mammal species and these include serval cats, Congo clawless otter, Giant Forest Hog, Eastern Needle-clawed Galago, Golden Cat, mongoose, Bosman’s Potto, Marsh Mongoose, and leopard among others.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is one of the ancient parks in Africa located in the Northern Province of Rwanda in Musanze. The park covers an area of about 162sqkm and was garzetted in 1925 mainly to conserve the World’s remaining population of Mountain Gorillas. Volcanoes National Park lies within the Great Virunga Volcano Conservation area and it is home to various Wildlife species. These include mammals like mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, Bufaloes, bush pigs, duikers, forest hogs, forest elephants, spotted hyenas and many others. The park also has about 178 bird species with 29 species that are endemic to the Rwenzori mountains and the Virunga.

 

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali International Airport – Kigali City Tour and Visit to the Genocide Memorial Site – Transfer to your Hotel

The 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari Holiday will start with a pick up from the International Airport of Kigali. Our professional driver guide from Paradise Adventure Vacations will meet and greet you, he will brief you about the safari and thereafter drive you through Kigali for a City Tour. You will also visit the Genocide Memorial Site where you will learn about the history of The Rwandan Genocide. Later you will continue to your Hotel for rest and relaxation from your long flight.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park – Canopy walk

After a mouthwatering breakfast, you will drive Southwestwards to Nyungwe Forest National Park. This drive will take about 6 hours, however, it will offer you stunning views of the athousand hills of Rwanda. On reaching, you will have lunch and then later, you will proceed for the Iconic Canopy walk along the Igishigishigi trail. This 2km trail will give you breathtaking views of the Rainforest and the beautiful wild flowers. You will also be amazed by several birds singing. Some of them include the Rwenzori Turaco, great blue Turaco, paradise flycatcher, Rwenzori Nightjar, white-tailed crested flycatcher, Kivu ground thrush, montane double-collard sun and red-throated Alethe and also forest hornbills. On return to your accommodation, you will have dinner and an overnight.

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest National Park – Chimpanzee Trekking

On your day 3 of the 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari Holiday, you will prepare for the day by wearing appropriate clothing and then proceed to Uwinka visitor center. While there, you will be briefed about the Do’s and the Don’ts of the park, you will be assigned a chimpanzee group to look out for and also a park ranger to help you during the trek.

On your way to find these chimpanzees, you will encounter various primates like Silver monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, golden monkeys, Dent’s Mona Monkeys, mangabeys and also bird species like the Grauer’s warbler, Rwenzori Turaco, Blue Turaco, purple breasted and the blue-headed sunbird. You may as well encounter some mammal species. On finding the chimpanzees, you will spend a remarkable 1 hour in their presence and then later return back to your accommodation for a delicious lunch. The rest of the day will be spent relaxing at your lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park – Relaxation  

On your day 4 of the Safari Holiday, you will have a relaxed breakfast and thereafter drive for approximately 8 hours to Volcanoes National park which is located in the far Northwestern corner of Rwanda. You will have lunch on your way and on arrival, you will check into your accommodation for relaxation as you prepare for the next day’s activity.

Day 5: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking – IBY ‘lwacu Community Encounter

This Day 5 of your 6 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari Holiday will start with a lovely breakfast. Proceed to the park’s headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing on the Do’s and the Don’ts while you are with the mountain gorillas, you will as well be assigned a park ranger who will take you throughout the trek. Then start the search for the mountain gorillas which will take about 2 to 8 hours depending on their movement.

You will encounter various bird species and as your gaze meets the gentle eyes of these Great Apes, you will spend a maximum of 1 hour with these majestic creatures as you watch and capture every moment while they go about their day to day activities. Feel free to ask as many questions as possible about the gorillas and ensure to take several pictures. Later you will return to your accommodation for a delicious lunch and spend the rest.

IBY ‘lwacu Community Encounter

Later in the afternoon, you will drive to the indigenous IBY ‘Iwacu community and share life experiences. You will learn about the African culture and lifestyle, also something unique about this community is that the majority of men here are reformed poachers who have now resorted to taking part in the Conservation Projects within the park. You will engage in many activities including, joining Royalty by being crowned King and Queen of the day, enjoy music and dance. Return back to your accommodation later for your dinner and an overnight.

Our fleet consists of 4×4 Toyota Land cruisers with a hinged roof and skylights above the front seats. The hinged roof offers two main advantages: it provides shade without restricting the view, so that you can enjoy your safari even in the very sunny hours of the day. It also allows a 360-degree all-round view.
